Amelia Crawford, 11, of Sydney’s Northern Beaches has been announced as the winner of Junior Landcare’s nation-wide search for an outgoing, confident and environmentally conscious young ambassador.

The competition called on interested youngsters, under 16 years of age, to submit a brief video clip of them impersonating legendary adventurer, naturalist and documentary-maker, Sir David Attenborough.

Landcare Australia CEO Heather Campbell congratulated Amelia on her achievement and commended her efforts to be sustainable and promote environmental awareness.

“We were searching for a young ambassador who is passionate about the environment and motivated to promote Junior Landcare to children around Australia. We were delighted by the high caliber of entries, which says great things about the next generation of Landcarers.”

Amelia was very excited to be chosen as Junior Landcare’s ambassador:

“It’s now up to my generation to bring new attitudes and ideas on how we can live on this planet together alongside the animals, trees and nature as they have just as much right as us to live here too. We must learn to become protectors not destroyers, we kids must plant the seeds for the future trees to grow.

“My first job as ambassador is to remind all Yates Junior Landcare Pumpkin Challengers to go to the website and log their pumpkin weight and upload a photo. I can’t wait to see who has the biggest pumpkin and what they plan to do with it!”

Amelia has recently been involved in several beach cleanups around the Northern Beaches, and is keen to remove plastics bags and other debris that kills much marine life through entanglement and ingestion.

Amelia also recently assisted local a Coastcare group install marker buoys warning boats not to anchor near the Manly little penguin nesting sites at Quarantine and Store beaches.

This year she will be continuing her work at Manly and will also be involved with the Brookvale Greendale Creek rehabilitation project.
